Five Finger Death Punch

Five Finger Death Punch is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles California, formed in 2005 by Hungarian born guitarist, Zoltan Bathory. Bathory brought together the talents of Ivan Moody (vocals), Jeremy Spencer (drums), Matt Snell (bass), and Jason Hook (guitars). The band was named "Five Finger Death Punch" as a nod to Hong-Kong Kung-Fu cinema.[1]

History

[edit] Early Years (2005)

Five Finger Death Punch was founded in 2005 by guitarist Zoltan Bathory (formerly of U.P.O.), the members he recruited to the band include former Motograter vocalist Ivan Moody W.A.S.P. drummer Jeremy Spencer who also jammed with Neil Yockey)| former Anubis Rising/Deadsett bassist Matt Snell, and Jason Hook. Caleb Bingham, the original Death Punch lead guitarist, was replaced with Darrell Roberts of W.A.S.P. in 2007, who in turn was replaced by Jason Hook in 2009.[1]

[edit] The Way Of The Fist (2006-2008)

The band recorded their debut album The Way of the Fist in 2006 with Stevo "Shotgun" Bruno (Mötley Crüe, Prong) and Mike Sarkisyan (Spineshank). The record was mixed and mastered by former Machine Head and Soulfly guitarist Logan Mader.[2] Soon thereafter, the band signed a deal with Firm Music, a branch of "The Firm".[3] Their debut album The Way of the Fist was released on July 31, 2007. The record charted into the Billboard 200 on its first week of release, and reached the #1 position on Billboard's New Artist/Heetseekers chart. In an "unfriendly climate for metal", their debut single "The Bleeding", went top ten against all odds and received radio airplay for eight months and the video for the song was voted on MTV2's Headbangers Ball Top 5 Metal Videos of the Year.[1] Death Punch not just repeated but surpassed their first single's success with their follow-up single, "Never Enough". The song charted faster than even that of "The Bleeding", until the third single "Stranger Than Fiction" took its place. The band accomplished 8 major tour cycles supporting their first album, finishing up on the main stage of the 2009 Download Festival and winning Metal Hammer's Golden Gods Award for "Best New Band".

[edit] War Is The Answer (2009 onwards)

The band's second album, War is the Answer, was released September 22, 2009. It was co-produced by Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne) and mixed by Randy Staub (Metallica, Stone Sour, Nickelback). The album landed at #7 on the Billboard 200, moving over 44,000 in its first week of release, an album that met the hype generated by leading UK heavy metal/hard rock media such as Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. The first single off the album, "Hard to See" entered US rock radio's top 10 after only a couple of weeks on the charts.

To promote War Is the Answer, Five Finger Death Punch embarked on the Shock and Raw US Tour. Main support on the tour was provided by Shadows Fall, with additional support coming from Otep and 2Cents. Upon completing the US run of the tour, Five Finger Death Punch then brought the Shock and Raw tour to Europe, finishing off with a run of dates in the UK. Main support for these dates was again Shadows Fall, and opening acts for the UK portion of the tour were Rise To Remain and Magnacult. At the conclusion of the band's show at the Electric Ballroom in London, Ivan Moody announced to the crowd the band would be playing the Download Festival in 2010[4]. Since the UK tour concluded, the band has also been announced as one of the headliners for the Metal Hammer Hammerfest II Festival in Wales in March 2010.

is an American deathcore band from Riverside, California, formed in 2002. The band consists of singer Mitch Lucker, guitarists Chris Garza and Mark Heylmun, drummer Alex Lopez and bassist Dan Kenny. Since their inception, the band has released two full-length studio albums, two EPs, four music videos and won two awards.

History

The Cleansing (2002–2008)

Suicide Silence were founded in 2002 in Riverside, California, by members Mitch Lucker and Chris Garza and performed their first show at a local area within Riverside and at that time the band consisted of the members Chris Garza and Josh Goddard as guitarists, Mike Bodkins as bassist, Alex Lopez as drummer and two vocalists, Mitch Lucker and Tanner Womack. Shortly after their first performance, Womack was fired from the band and they released their first demo the following next year. They released their second demo in 2003 and recorded their third in 2005. Following within 2005, the band released an EP entitled Suicide Silence EP, two years later, the band released their first full-length album The Cleansing, the album was recorded with producer Krissan Duwason and mixed by Tue Madsen. The album debuted at number 94 on the Billboard 200[1], selling 7,250 copies the first week, and became the second best-selling artist debut in Century Media history.

All prior to signing to Century Media, the band released self-recorded demos in 2003 and 2004, and in late 2005 the group put out their first quality studio-recorded release entitled Suicide Silence EP[2][3] which was released in the UK by Third Degree Records and later re-released by the English label In at the Deep End Records and in the US by SOS Records. The band were included to take part in Mayhem Festival that took place summer 2008. They toured Europe with Parkway Drive and Bury Your Dead, following a successful US tour with the same bands. Also touring with Parkway Drive, A Day to Remember and The Acacia Strain in mid 2008 during the time when they were included to perform at Sweat Fest, and were beginning to gain a wide range of fans throughout the world.

In 2008 the band covered the song "Engine No. 9" by Deftones that appeared on their debut album Adrenaline, Suicide Silence released the cover on their limited edition second EP Green Monster as well as iTunes.

Shortly before embarking on the Mayhem Festival, the band's MySpace profile title read "Suicide Silence (Is writing a new album)". On June 26, 2008, Mitch Lucker appeared on the Headbangers Ball blog podcast. In the interview, Mitch stated that the new album would be recorded through tracks as opposed of being recorded live, such as The Cleansing. The album was released on June 30, 2009, but was previewed on MySpace in the days leading up to the release.[4] He also said the new album would "blow The Cleansing away". Machine was chosen by the band to be the producer of the album.

Suicide Silence began recording their second album entitled No Time to Bleed in February with producer Machine and engineer Will Putney.[5] The band has been playing four new songs, entitled "No Time to Bleed", "Your Creations", "Lifted" and "Wake Up" from the upcoming album on their Cleansing the Nation tour, and the Music As A Weapon tour. In April they received the Revolver Golden God award for "Most Innovative Band" and performed at the awards show.

Suicide Silence were included on 2009's Pedal to the Metal tour, along with the bands Mudvayne, Static-X, Bury Your Dead, Dope and Black Label Society.

In 2009, Suicide Silence was awarded the Golden God award for "Best New Talent", their second Golden God award received to date.[6]

Suicide Silence released their second full-length album No Time to Bleed on June 30, 2009 through Century Media with Machine as producer. The album peaked at #32 on the Billboard 200.[7] Their song "Genocide" is featured in the Saw VI soundtrack.[8]

Throughout November and December 2009 Suicide Silence started touring with Machine Head and Megadeth and played at numerous shows, but then had to cancel the final show that would be performed in Reno, NV on December 16, 2009. Vocalist Mitch Lucker originally hid the reasons upon why it was coming to happen by stating "We're sorry to announce that we won't be playing tonight in Reno. Megadeth, Warbringer and Arcanium will still be there so head out and show your support for those awesome bands!" but then one of the band managers announced; "Suicide Silence are not allowed to play Reno due to Dave Mustaine's ego. Kicked off last two days of tour and had laminates removed." Following along drummer Alex Lopez explained "Dave Mustaine kicked us off the Megadeth tour [because] he wanted to take our laminates for a little incident [some] weeks ago, so we told him to fuck off." While bassist Dan Kenny stated "I would love a fist fight with Dave Mustaine, I hear he is quite good at MMA; I would triangle him in a second!".[9][10]

Styles and influences

Suicide Silence perform an extreme metal musical style known as deathcore,[11][12][13] which is a fusion between the two heavy metal musical styles metalcore and death metal.[14][15] The band perform this style as well as gain influences from several extreme musical genres such as black metal, grindcore, and mathcore[16]. The mathcore elements can be seen in the varied speed changes and occasional time signatures of the band's music. The vocals of Mitch Lucker are frequently fluctuating between death growls and high-pitched screamed vocals used in black metal[17]. The drumming is very fast-paced, grindcore influenced, and employs a liberal use of double bass drumming and blast beats.

Bring Me the Horizon

Bring Me the Horizon
are an English metalcore band from Sheffield, Yorkshire, who formed in 2004. They played a style of music that fuses death metal and metalcore, known as deathcore on their first album — but they have taken on a more eclectic style with their latest album.

History

Early years and Count Your Blessings (2004–2007)

Bring Me the Horizon began in 2004 with members of many defunct bands from around their local area.[5][6] They acquired their name based on a line taken from the film Pirates of the Caribbean, in which Captain Jack Sparrow shouts "Now... Bring me that horizon."[3] After slightly altering the original line, by simply changing 'that' to 'the', Bring Me the Horizon then became the official name of the band.

They are currently signed to Visible Noise Records, but were originally signed to Thirty Days of Night Records and were the first band to be signed to that label. The band are also signed to Epitaph Records in the US and to Shock Records in Australia. They released their debut album Count Your Blessings in October 2006 in the UK and in August 2007 in the United States. They have toured in the past with bands such as Lostprophets, The Blackout[7]; Killswitch Engage and The Haunted[8]. They performed a headlining tour of the UK during March and April 2007 with the now defunct metalcore band I Killed the Prom Queen. They played Download Festival 2007 in June also with Iron Maiden, Slayer, and others.[9]

They also played the North American leg of the tour, including a guest appearance Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes on 6 August in Calgary. He joined Oli in chanting the start of their song "Diamonds Aren't Forever".

In November 2007 they toured on the Australian leg of Gigantour, playing three dates. They returned to Australia in May-June 2008, appearing on I Killed The Prom Queen's final ever tour.

Suicide Season and line-up change (2008–2009)

Bring Me the Horizon had been writing and recording a second studio album over the beginning of 2008. They had been in Sweden recording the album throughout April and May with Fredrik Nordström, who has worked with bands such as At The Gates, Arch Enemy, I Killed The Prom Queen and Dimmu Borgir. The album was released on 29 September 2008. Suicide Season is completely different to previous album Count Your Blessings, having a more metalcore vibe to it, similar to the debut EP release, This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For.[citation needed]

The band recently embarked on their first headline tour of the US, as well as appearing in the 2008 Warped Tour. Bring Me the Horizon are also joined Mindless Self Indulgence, In Case Of Fire, Black Tide and Dir en grey on the Kerrang! and Relentless 2009 UK tour.[citation needed] They are also set to join Thursday, Cancer Bats, Four Year Strong and Pierce the Veil on the Taste of Chaos 2009 North American tour.

It was announced on 27 August 2009 that Bring Me the Horizon will be releasing a remixed version of Suicide Season, titled Suicide Season: Cut Up, in the UK on 2 November 2009.[10] In an interview with Rock Sound, Oliver Sykes stated that the idea came about after asking a friend to remix one of their songs, and after being very pleased with the end result the band decided to take it a step further and get the whole of Suicide Season remixed. Musicians and producers featured on the album includes Tek-One, Robot Sonic, Ben Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Outcry Collective, L’Amour La Morgue (Ian Watkins from Lostprophets), Utah Saints and Shawn Crahan from Slipknot. Sykes also stated that “There’s not a song on there that really sounds like the original. What’s great though is the diversity of each song. There’s dub-step to hip-hop, electro to drum and bass”[10]

In March 2009, guitarist Curtis Ward left the band. A number of reasons have been cited for his departure: in an interview, bassist Matt Kean commented that "it became apparent he wasn't enjoying it" and that it was "just about commitment".[11] In May 2009, Jona Weinhofen, formerly of I Killed The Prom Queen and Bleeding Through, joined the band on a temporary basis to fill-in for Curtis. However, it was revealed in July 2009 that he would become an official member of Bring Me the Horizon, partly due to his discontent with living in America, hence leaving Bleeding Through. According to Oliver Sykes in an interview on the subject, Weinhofen has injected the band with a new-found enthusiasm, causing the bands performances to be 'so much better and refreshing', and he feels they have 'stepped up another level'.[12]

Third studio album (2009–present)

In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine, it has be revealed that Bring Me the Horizon will begin writing the follow-up to Suicide Season during the summer of 2009, with the plan to go into Studio Fredman with producer Fredrik Nordström (who produced Suicide Season) in March 2010, hopefully resulting in an album release in summer 2010.[12]

Controversy

Nottingham incident

While on tour in the United Kingdom allegations were made against vocalist Oliver Sykes that he urinated upon and then assaulted a female fan after a gig at Nottingham Rock City when she allegedly refused his sexual advances. Sykes was subsequently charged with urinating on the fan, but not with physical assault.[13] Online Music Zine Drowned In Sound claimed that Bring Me The Horizon were banned from Nottingham Rock City.[14] However the band's label Visible Noise denied these rumors and the band subsequently played Nottingham Rock City on 1 December 2007.[15]

On 13 April, Sykes appeared in Nottingham Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault relating to the alleged urination incident, to which he pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned until early May.[16] On 3 May 2007 Sykes attended Nottingham Magistrates court for the second time and confirmed his not guilty plea. The case was adjourned again until 17 September.[17] Due to lack of evidence, all charges against Sykes were dropped.[18]

YouTube video with Architects

During a tour, Bring Me the Horizon and Architects filmed a video showing fights between Oliver Sykes and Architects' lead singer Sam Carter. The video was filmed at an all-day event in Karlsruhe, Germany and shows what seemed to be Sam Carter committing acts of physical violence towards Oliver. The video was uploaded onto the online video website, YouTube of which it attracted thousands of hits. This video outraged many Bring Me the Horizon fans causing many people to send hate mail towards Sam Carter.

"We're mates with the guys and were sharing a bus for the whole two week tour!" Carter told Kerrang!. "The fact that people believed it was real is just so ridiculous! We filmed the fight about three times and even added in comedy punch noises and yet kids were still sending us over-the-top hate mail!" Oliver Sykes also commented saying "All-day events can get boring very fast so we conjured up the first idiotic thing we could think of and made it as unbelievable as possible. Sam was getting death threats from kids off MySpace and at the same time getting praised for laying me out! We're sorry if anyone was upset by this although I'm sure most people reading this probably like the thought of me getting a punch in the face!". The issue was later resolved with things returning back to normal.[19]
